The situation in Bulgaria’s judicial system was not as hopeless as it was presented, Bulgaria’s Prosecutor-General Boris Velchev said during an international conference in Sofia, entitled 60 Days Before EU Membership: What to Expect, What to Do.
Swiftness in concluding trials was not Bulgaria’s judicial system’s main problem, Velchev said, as quoted by Darik Radio. Bulgaria’s judicial system was actually not the slowest in Europe in the time needed to conclude a trial.
He admitted that there was corruption among magistrates.
The problem was not only that some magistrates took bribes, but also that people offered bribes, Darik quoted Velchev as saying.
Velchev called on the business sector to refer to the prosecution, rather than offering bribes.
