BULGARIA'S IT MARKET FACES QUALIFIED LABOUR SHORTAGE
08:00 Tue 13 Feb 2007

The Bulgarian IT industry will suffer a shortage of specialist as the market is expected to grow in near future.

The number of big investment projects in the IT sector grows, while the number of qualified specialists is insufficient, Capital weekly reported.

Small and large companies rather than local and foreign companies come in conflict, head of Bulgarian Association of Software Companies (BASC) Georgi Sharkov said.

According to the European Information Technology Observatory (EITO), the profit of Bulgarian IT companies in 2005 amounted to 373 million euro, an increase of 24.9 per cent compared to figures for 2004.

Sharkov said that according to BASC information, the Bulgarian IT market will grow by 30 per cent in 2006, which means higher demand for work force.

In 2006 Bulgaria was chosen among the 14 countries to set up a technological centre of the American giant HP. HP's investment in Bulgaria will inevitably cause problems on the local labour market.

Nearly 5 000 specialist are missing in the IT sector , but unused potential existed, Sharkov said.

The success of IT companies in the future will depend on good human resouces policy and appropriate bonuses in order to keep staff within a company, employment agents told Capital.
