Bulgaria's green party issued a media statement on December 11 2007, in which it re-confirmed its position against the construction of nuclear power plants and against the favourable opinion by the EC for the Belene nuclear power plant project.

The statement from the green party came one day after a statement by Greenpeace and other environmental NGO's, also protesting the EC decision.

Bulgaria's green party said in its statement that it has always been and would be against the construction of any nuclear power plants. The party said that Bulgaria did not need new sources of electricity, but it needed to increase energy efficiency, save energy consumption and work on renewable energy sources.

The main green focus of the economical politics of the party, the media statement said, were to decrease dependency on natural energy resources and to guarantee a nuclear power free energy system.

The Bulgarian green party, like other European green parties, were against nuclear energy because of the civil and military threat it created for future generations, the statement said.

This dependency is due to a great extent to the absence of progressive policies for real economic development which would encourage the enterprising spirit of the hard-working Bulgarian people and would lead to the creation of more viable small and medium firms and more employment. Buraucracy and corruption are among the major obstacles but I am optimistic about the future of Bulgaria.

By "dependency" in my previous comment I meant the dependency of government policies on nuclear power.
