Serbia has a chance to avoid making the same mistakes as Bulgaria did, Serbian broadcaster B92 quoted Nemanja Nenadić from Transparency Serbia as saying.
Corruption is far-reaching and very dangerous, particularly in terms of political corruption, Nenadić was quoted as saying.
B92 quoted Nikola Jovanović, coordinator for harmonizing laws in the Office for European Law in Belgrade, as saying that he believed the repercussions Bulgaria was facing were grave and far-reaching, and would have a detrimental effect on future applications the country would make to the EU.
Nenadić believed Serbia still had a problem with corruption. “According to a study, 12 to 20 per cent of people in Serbia are prepared to give or take a bribe, which is worse than Bulgaria,” Nenadić said.
"We have to change our mindset, and do this, not for Europe’s sake, but our own," Nenadić said.
