Over the past 15 years the Constitutional Court (CC) in Bulgaria demonstrated its political impartiality and independence from the executive, legislative and judicial powers, President Georgi Purvanov said.
On June 30 Purvanov attended the 15th anniversary of the CC, Darik Radio reported.
Despite frequent criticisms, the CC remained one of the foundations of Bulgaria's democracy and guaranteed strict enforcement of the Constitution, Purvanov said. He added that the CC was a neutral and independent institution.
On May 16 the European Commission (EC) criticised Bulgaria's judiciary in its report on the country's EU accession readiness, saying that the judicial system lacked independence and efficiency.
CC chairman Nedelcho Beronkov admitted that Bulgaria's legislation lacked efficient mechanisms to deal with unconstitutional acts. He proposed increasing the number of institutions able to approach the CC.
Prime Minister Sergei Stanishev was also present at the ceremony. He said that the CC had proven to be an efficient instrument guaranteeing constitutional supremacy. Stanishev added that CC rulings had always been observed, which demonstrated Bulgaria's legal culture.
