Bulgaria’s Cabinet ended its first year in office with a promise to promote better social and financial policies in the coming years.

Right wing opposition parties already criticised the ruling tripartite coalition for its failure to fulfill its election promises. Union of Democratic Forces (UDF) and Democrats for Strong Bulgaria (DSB) said the coalition was an excuse to avoid responsibility.

Since it lacked the majority to form a Cabinet on its own after the elections, the Bulgarian Socialist Party (BSP) formed a coalition with the National Movement Simeon II (NMSII) and with the Movement for Rights and Freedoms (MRF).

NMSII member Anelia Mingova said that the criticism was typical and expected shortly before Bulgaria’s presidential elections.

Mingova said that leaders of the coalition were critical enough and aware of the work needed to guarantee the national interest. Last week coalition leaders presented a declaration listing achievements and further reforms to be implemented, Bulgarian National Radio reported.

The Cabinet did its best and the effort was going to result in positive developments, Coalition for Bulgaria member Mihail Mikov said.

Economic achievements were unquestionable and figures proved this, Mikov said. He quoted statistics, according to which unemployment has reached the lowest level for the past 10 years.
