‘BULGARIA'S ABANDONED CHILDREN’- BBC
17:38 Fri 14 Sep 2007

UK’s BBC4 showed a documentary by Kate Blewett called Bulgaria’s Abandoned Children.

Blewett shot the film over a period of nine months at a “social care home” for physically and mentally disabled children in Northern Bulgaria.

The documentary “contained another 90 minutes of undiluted horror,” a comment in UK’s Telegraph daily said.

Bulgaria’s Abandoned Children caused shocking disbelief that “appalling cruelty and neglect” is happening in Bulgaria, the newspaper said. In the early 1990’s a row involving orphanages in Romania caused controversy, but the “chief difference is that Bulgaria is already a member of the European Union.”

Most domestic animals would be treated better than the children in the orphanage in question. They received little treatment and neither education, no stimulation.

The “cynicism of the staff” of the personnel was unbelievable, the newspaper said.

With regard to Bulgaria's abandoned child, can we the public help by donating money? What registered charity/organization with adequate direction and caring staff would be in a position to work with these institutions in Bulgaria. Please don't tell me its a case of the Bulagrian government not allowing interference from outsiders? Michelle

The Bulgarian Government should hang their heads in shame, fordoing nothing to help the babies and children in distress. The EU should force them to act to improve matters, but the EU I'm afraid is just a talking shop, composed of non elected (and dare I say it, non electable nobodies). We ought to boycott all things Bulgarian, and refrain from taking holidays to drink in their backward culture.

I have been searching this topic for a while now on-line. It makes me smile how many people say "Europe/the EU should do something" WE ARE EUROPE, WE ARE THE EU. We need to demand change from the top. This programme outraged me - I could not believe this is going on and I cannot rest easy when those children where literally fading away in front of our eyes. Please take action: Contact the UK Bulgarian Embassy (who commented on the show) http://www.bulgarianembassy-london.org/index.php?option=com_contact&Itemid=243 it is also possible to lodge an individual complaint (they call it a petition but it's an individual activity) with the EU parliament http://www.europarl.europa.eu/parliament/public/staticDisplay.do?language=EN&id=49 Lets make some NOISE - These children do not have voices and we must speak on their behalf!

After watching this documentary, which was so unbelivably shocking and the most harrowing programme ive seen,i put pen to paper and have written to the Bulgarian embassy in London.I expressed my disgust at the abuse and neglect suffered by the children and have asked why this is happening, what is being done to change things and what ordinary members of the public can do to help.I am currently awaiting a response and will relay there reply as soon as it arrives.

"We ought to boycott all things Bulgarian, and refrain from taking holidays to drink in their backward culture." Dear British, I know how you treat your children. You drink like crazy, you beat them, you abuse them. Take care of your children first and then speak about Bulgaria. We are more advanced than you!
Comments by Dorothy - 03:33 08 Oct 2007
In response to the comment left by HRISTO: How can you say that bulgaria is more advanced than Britain??? If you believe that leaving children in so called care homes to die from malnutrition and abuse is acceptable, then you are quite clearly deluded!!!!
Comments by Ronan - 19:15 08 Oct 2007
Hristo - did you even see the documentry? Bulgaria should be suspended from the EU until this is sorted out - boycott all things Bulgarian in the maentime.

i travel to bulgaria every year to distribute shoes, clothes and supplies to orphanages all over bulgaria. not all are homes for handicapped. many are normal, abandoned children and the conditions are deplorable. however, through bulgarianchild.org we have made many changes and brought much attention to the government and american embassy regarding the sad conditions. please continue to pray for and keep up to date on progress in these homes. i know some of the children by name.

I watched this programme in utter horror, how in this day and age can this happen, worse still be allowed ,those children malnourished were shown no dignity ,stimilation, or even saw outside never felt a hug or knew fun god that is so sad, I cried my eyes out for those poor poor children, worse still when they reach adulthood they are shipped of to what looks like a consentration camp , and to think that director sat there and said she would be happy to live there , wow wonder what her house looks like !!! We as a nation along with others put so much into war and machines ,can some of it not go to at least give those children love and happiness, I could go on for ever but think I made my point.

Dear Hristo & dear Mr Arts, I think you are both missing the point here. I do not think that the matter of technological or intellectual advancement is relevant at all; it's lack of basic humanity we're talking about here and you don't need to be advanced or educated to be human. As a Bulgarian married to a British I resent both of your generalisations about either societies; I am ashamed of the criminal actions of the Bulgarian government and certain members of its society, but I do not believe that boycoting everything Bulgarian and calling the BG culture backwards is going to help those poor babies. What I do believe in is the power of the British public opinion. I know that the British of all people have never been a passive audience. I therefore, plead to all of you British and Bulgarian, who have been disgusted and distraught by this documentary - do not remain passive. We can all help change things for kids like them we can all write letters to the EC, to the Bulgarian Government and media (who are hushing the issue up currently) to the Human Rights Commission, to the BG Embassy. And if the Embassy cannot be bothered to reply, this does not mean we should stop showering them with letters. Someone has to answer for that after all! There are plenty of good charities too, who do an enormous amount to help, and also all of these children are currently up for adoption. So, there you go, you can do so much more than sitting back being angry and boycoting stuff.

For the first time in my life I feel ashamed to call myself Bulgarian. The ignorance and the indifference of all the people involved in taking care of those innocent children and our government policies and actions are appalling, disturbing and disgraceful. How do these people sleep at night knowing they have left these beautiful children in the state they are after all these national and international funding and charities? Where are all the money gone that are supposed to help these already punished enough by their parents who abandoned them children? Our Government should be deeply shaken and disturbed that conditions of this kind exist in the 21st century and humans are treated worse than animals. I was so upset and distressed after seeing the documentary I couldn't sleep or stop crying throughout the programme. No human being deserves to be treated in this inexcusable way especially innocent children. I hope this documentary is a wakeup call to our government who now can clearly see the big picture. I hope in their hearts they find the little humanity that is left and do something about it to help those special children. I would also like to help as much as possible as I am a parent and a human being above all.

I can honestly say after watching this documentary it broke my heart that these children were being treated that way. Some of them with only minor disabilities such as being deaf or blind with interaction these children to have a normal life if they had been given love and stimulaiton for the mind. Instead they are driven insane and end up roking like mad people. These children just need to be loved what can we do as individuals and a country? These beautiful children need people to play with to take them on walks so teach them. Not be beaten or abused and there broekn legs left until a fiml crew pointed out there legs are broken. Can we donate money or clothes? Xmas is coming how can we make them feel more loved and wanted? Can we send them parcels of goodies or bedding or toys? This should be promoted and taken higher these poor little boys and girls do not deserve to be treated this way. Could individuals visit by themselves to help? Its just broken my heart, I have a down syndrome cousin he has a normal life goes to school, plays on his pc at the weekends to think his disability is treated another way in another country is disgusting. We need to help them.

Like everyone else I was appalled by this programme, I have never seen such suffering of children, who didn’t ask to be born, abandoned and abused. Yes, what can we do? very little it would appear, judging by the Bulgarian Government’s response letter at the end of the programme. I agree with ‘Ralitza’s’ comments (12.46..19.11.07) we should keep writing to the Bulgarian Government and Embassy etc., but in this day and age we have the ‘computer’ and we can protest on mass!!!!! So, is there anyone out there that is capable of setting up a web site and to create a petition, where we can all go, to sign!!! This, then can be sent to the powers that be, with hopefully, a lot more force……..just think of the mathematics, if everyone sent a note to ten friends, to sign the petition , the result would be massive!!! Finally, before you all ask, why don’t I do it, the answer is simple….I am computer illiterate.

I watched the program last night on BBC2, I have never been so disgusted, angry and ashamed. It is unbelievable this is allowed to happen. Where the hell is the European parliament to sort this out? Is there any point sending donations, when they will blatantly never reach these children. I'd like to thank the people who made the film for opening peoples eyes and maybe we should lobby our own EMPs to press for European action.

Dear Andre, These are links to the petition. Someone already did what you are suggesting. Please sign the petition and tell as many people as possible about it. We have the power to change the lives of those innocent children so let's do something about it. http://www.ipetitions.com/petition/seaacof/ And there is one more: http://petitions.pm.gov.uk/BulgariasOrphans/ I found one more on the official web site of 10 Downing Street here it is: http://petitions.pm.gov.uk/Children-Dying/

I only caught the last hour of the documentary, however I was no less moved by it. For me the solution is simple with Bulgaria being part of the EU that is. Why can't our Government (Gordon Brown) get in there and sort these poor children out. Pay trained staff and social workers from the UK who have to meet very high standards regarding their values of all human life and let them run these childrens homes and change these children's lifes for ever. Most of all they would save their lifes from being short misserable ones to being long a fulfilling regardless of their disabilities and need. If the rules where the same all over the EU these workers would have been "struck off" never to work with human beings again. The heartless woman who called herself the director of the home would have recieved a long prison sentence for her crime of inhumanity to those vulnerable, poor but beautiful children and young people who she is allowing to leave to rott!! You have my email, I am a qualified SW, get in touch. I would be more that happy to be at your service in giving these children their lifes back that have been cruely taken from them. I feel bitter, angry and hearbroken that this has been allowed to happen and is still happening. Julie.....

Like everyone, I was sickened to the pit of my stomach watching this programme.I have 3 children and cannot feed them, put them on the potty, anything, without these images appearing in my head. I am sickened that 'human beings' can treat these poor ,sad, hurting children this way. I am going to sign any petition going but if anyone has any other ideas how I can help, please, please let me know. My 2yr old was prem and looks so like one of the children it is impossible to put this out of my mind.

Dear Elina, (20.47…19.11.07) Thanks for your response, yes, of coarse I will get onto these three links and sigh all the petitions and I would urge EVERYONE else to do the same, by passing on the three links to as many friends as possible….once again, thanks.

I was absolutely dumbfounded and upset at the lack of help and loving care the Bulgarian children were getting and could not believe that the human race could be so despicably uncaring [even prisoners of war are treated better than this can some one tell me why these unfortunate children are being persecuted , starved to death for existing and being abandoned, I actually cried as they cried it was a very moving program, thank you for showing us this so maybe some of us can help them some how. This is a real horror film .I personally would love to help them if there is any way this can be done I would like some info please Yours Sincerely Netty

too think that those poor children are going through that every day is just horrific.i work in the care sector, if there is anything i can do please let me know.the director of the home should be sacked.she is deluded.my dog could provide a better care delivery thn her.why is the EU not acting on this like it did when the romaniam care homes came in to th public eye.it is a disrace this country is allowed to be part of the EU. i would be glad to take a gap year to go work with these children if any charity has the means of accessing the homes???this is amounting to torture! the basic human rights are not being met or even close to it.

I watched this programme with horror as it hit a personal note with me.I have adopted my two daughters from a chinese orphanage equivalent to the bulgarian orphanage seen on tv.My youngest daughter was adopted in 2005 and came to us 13 months old severely malnourished unable to sit up,ringworm and extremely frightened as she had not been treated well. She now is a happy outgoing big bouncing girl of 3and a half. The lost potential of all these orphans is a crime and this happening in a EEC country is beyond belief What will be done about this!

A lot of horrific things are happening in Bulgaria. There is a lot of prejudice going on there. The Bulgarian mentality and behaviour badly needs to change. I too try to help underpriviladged kids in Bulgaria, and I meet there with so many and complex obstacles. But I haven't given up yet. Thank you all for raising awareness about the horrific conditions those kids struggle to survive in.
