Environment and Water Affairs Ministry is to request information from Serbia and Romania concerning the causes of the latest instance of Danube River pollution.
An oil spill was noticed close to Novo Selo on January 16. According to Focus news agency the spill entered Bulgaria close to Vidin and probably originated in Serbia.
Oil spills were still entering the Bulgarian part of the river in the afternoon. The density of the spills was low and they were scattered. The river region affected is 30km long and spills are floating 150 to 200m away from the shore.
Representatives of Kozloduy nuclear power plant, located on the shore, have been warned in order to ensure the safety of the power plant.
Analysts already took water samples to determine the type of pollution. According to most the spills originated in Serbia.
Representatives of the State Agency for Civil Protection said that the danger for the population of riverbank towns was insignificant as water was not used currently for irrigation.
