BULGARIA NEEDS OVER NINE BILLION EURO TO MEET EU ENVIRONMENTAL REQUIREMENTS
13:47 Mon 10 Jul 2006

By 2013 Bulgaria should invest over nine billion euro in environmental protection, Georgi Bozhinov, head of the parliamentary environment committee said.

Bulgaria had already synchronised its legislation on environment with EU laws but the state still had to impose complex pollution prevention system, Bozhinov said.

Bozhinov attended an international forum on the subject of EU legislation on prevention of air pollution, Bulgarian News Agency (BTA) reported. Greek, German, Latvian and Slovenian experts participated in the seminar.

One of Bulgaria's EU accession engagements included the introduction of renewable energy sources and technologies. By 2013 over 13 per cent of the electricity should be generated from alternative power sources, Bozhinov said.

To achieve the set goals, Bulgaria had to invest over nine billion euro, which would be provided by EU funds, the state budget and donations. It was impossible for Bulgarian companies to fulfil these engagements as they lacked the equipment needed for the reduction of pollution.
