Bulgaria’s government tries to speed up reforms in the judicial sector to ensure on-time EU accession, Financial Times reported.
Measures aim at dealing mainly with corruption and organised crimes, two problems that remain unresolved.
Police arrested recently high-level administrator on bribery charges. Deputy head of the state agriculture fund Krassimir Nedelchev was charged with participation in EU funds drainage schemes, Financial Times reported.
Nedelchev will be the first senior administrator, whose alleged involvement in illegal activities will be subjected to investigation.
The European Commission already warned official in the country the reforms progress needs to be speeded up for on-time accession in January 2007.
Prime Minister Sergei Stanishev said officials are committed to reforms. The process would continue even after the issuing of the final EC report on the country’s readiness to enter the EU, said Stanishev.
During a visit to Brussels Prosecutor-General Boris Velchev said changes to the judicial system are producing results already.
