On June 2 Bulgaria honours the memory of Hristo Botev and all revolutionaries who died in the liberation war.

The memory of revolutionaries was honoured for the first time in 1901 on Vola Peak. Some members of Hristo Botev's rebel group were present at the event.

Each year at midday on June 2 air raid sirens in each Bulgarian city go off, calling for a minute of silence, Bulgarian National Radio reported.

Prime Minister Sergei Stanishev will participate in the celebrations on Okoltchitsa Peak. The day will be commemorated in all Bulgarian cities as the 130th anniversary since Botev's death.

Botev was a poet and a revolutionary. Born in 1848 in Kalofer, Botev was sent for studies in Odessa, where he was influenced by the work of Russian poets and writers.

He died in 1876 as head of a revolutionary group. A stone inscription at the place he was killed reads “your prophecy has come true- you live on.”
