12:10 Wed 24 Jan 2007

US will donate Bulgaria's Interior Ministry equipment worth $313 000.

US Export Control and Related Border Security Assistance (EXBS) programme donated the equipment, THE US embassy to Bulgaria said.

The donation consists of equipment for the detection of chemical, biological and radioactive materials.

It also includes training  installations, so that policemen would be trained to prevent smuggling of such substances. Chemical, biological and radioactive materials could be used for the creation of mass destruction weapons.

The training office would be located in the city of Pazardzhik, a press release said. Deputy Interior Minister Kamen Penkov and deputy chief of US mission to Bulgaria Alexander Karagiannis would be present at the office opening.

EXBS had granted Bulgaria the most modern equipment for the fight against  chemical, biological and radioactive substance smuggling in the past four years, Focus news agency said.

All EXBS donations for Bulgaria totaled  $ 4.5 million.
