The Bulgarian Helsinki Committee sent a letter to members of the National Assembly, concerning Bulgaria’s UN engagements.
Bulgaria has to report on human rights developments in the country but such analyses have not been drafted in a significant period of time, Focus news agency reported.
After a UN summit on February 16, it became clear Bulgaria is late with the presentation of eight reports for the past five years and two reports needed for a 10-year period.
Only 11 other countries have delayed the presentation of such reports more than Bulgaria. Among them are Afghanistan, Ethiopia, the Gambia, Liberia, Sierra Leone, Somalia and Uruguay.
All Council of Europe member countries have managed to keep their engagements to an extent significantly bigger than Bulgaria’s.
The Bulgarian Helsinki Committee letter expresses concern with the lack of will to meet UN requirements, accepted though the signing of international agreements.
