BULGARIA CELEBRATES EUROPE DAY
14:14 Wed 09 May 2007

Bulgaria will mark Europe Day on May 9 for the ninth time.

It is the first such celebration since the country's European Union (EU) accession, Bulgarian news agency BTA reported.

Concerts, art exhibitions, literary marathons and sports events will be held throughout the country. Information boards in schools will exhibit EU symbols.

May 9 1950 is considered to be the first step towards the creation of the EU. On that day French foreign minister Robert Schuman told international media that France, Germany and other European countries should pool their coal and steel production as a first step towards the foundation of a European federation.

The 2007 celebrations of Europe Day are dedicated to the European year of equal abilities. Bulgaria's EU information centre will organise a photo exhibition of 30 works on the occasion. The pictures will communicate a message about breaking stereotypes, abolishing discrimination and promoting equal rights of all Europeans.
