Bulgaria: Brits’ favourite summer holiday destination

Bulgaria is the best value-for-money summer holiday destinations for UK citizens, according to this year’s Best Value Breaks survey by Teletext Holidays and reported by the British newspaper The Sun. The country ranks highly because of cheap flights and accommodation. Morocco was the second best destination.

The beer is cheap and you will spend less money in Bulgaria than in Spain, the newspaper said. Food is also cheap. The quality of hotel offers, the climate and the beautiful scenery are the other main factors that put Bulgaria at the top of the rankings, according to the paper.

The publication compared prices in Bulgarian resorts to their counterparts in other countries, thus trying to convince tourists of the benefits of holidaying in Bulgaria. Nonetheless, given the current situation in Bulgarian coastal resorts, the ranking sounds more like an advertising campaign. Recent reports about the prices in Bulgarian summer prices catching up with those in European prime locations are not an exaggeration. A growing number of Bulgarians are shunning local holiday villages in favour of foreign destinations; admitting that a holiday package abroad has recently emerged as a cheaper alternative. Also, Bulgarian resorts are increasingly considered over-constructed, noisy and do not have excellent customer service – these are the most common complaints, according to the State Agency for Tourism’s (SAT) report on the 2007 summer holiday season.

Prices in Bulgaria’s winter resorts are also similar with those in the Alps and other popular European mountain locations, as a simple comparison of the price of a daily pass shows.

Although, the number of British visitors to Bulgaria is still significant, their interest in the country has recently plummeted. SAT’s surveys, which are carried out on a regular basis, have registered the decrease. It is too early to say, though, whether it is just a temporary fluctuation or a more long-term trend.

I will give you my view as to why people from the UK are losing interest. I used recommended Bulgarian lawyers to buy my first property and the end result was to find they had allowed me to sign a contract that was considered out rageous as it offered me no compensation even after a 7 month delay. Using a Bulgarian developer on the Black Sea coast the project has not gone ahead as planned and after 2 years my apartments have not started. I have tried to get money refunded ( deposits)and so far it is proving very difficult to get anywhere despite being able to prove breach of contract. Dealing with Bulgarian Developers and Lawyers is enough to put anyone off buying based on my experience. It is all very well to give advice but it is not always easy to make sure you are dealing with lawyers that understand developers contracts not to mention trustworthy Agents. On top of this you now see the pound sterling only buying 1.30 euros to the pound so everything is more expensive for UK citizens so some of the silly prices for poor quality build may have to be adjusted downwards. What I can say in Bulgarias favour is that you have a wonderful and beautiful country but do not spoil it like you have done in Bansko. It would also be nice to find Taxi drivers not taking UK citizens for a ride with loaded fares especially at Airports.

It's pay back time for Sunny Beach. Swedish traveler to sunny Beach has droped more than 57% as for the bookings to this day. Corupt police, taxidrivers that rape and robbing and overcharge us visitors will not make us come back. And as soon and as long trvelers don't recomend our friends and other, Sunny Beach will be a place no traveler wants to go to.

I am sorry to hear of others disapointments in Bulgaria. 4 years ago when I was 1st in Bulgaria I planned to buy at the coast after enjoying a fab holiday their. I returned to Bulgaria after 2 weeks and spent a couple months driving and staying at many places in the country. I decided on buying in the centre of Bulgaria between Plovdiv and Stara Zagora. I renovated an old house in a village where the locals were all very kind in helping and guiding me. I spend the summer in Bulgaria and rent out my home for holiday makers who want to experience peace and the natural beauty and not be ripped off. I have only to go 10k for an olympic size mineral pool with a restaurant in the grounds. The cost is 2pounds. I have 1500 sq mtrs land and have a couple take care of growing all organic produce in return for the crops being their supply all year. My village is paradise, the small town of Chirpan only 6k away and the biggest market I have ever been to only 15k away. I hope to one day retire there, the villages will never become conctete jungles.
