BULGARIA is the only Balkan country participating in the fifth World Horticultural Exhibition Floriada 2002 in the Netherlands.

Today is Bulgaria’s National Day at the event. The exhibition is under the motto Bulgaria, A Land of Ancient Culture and Beautiful Nature.

“Bulgaria is presenting its wine-growing industry and gardening as well as demonstrating how Bulgarian yoghurt and rose oil is made,” Deputy Agriculture and Forests Ministers Andriana Sukova-Tosheva told a news conference.

Bulgaria’s presentation occupies a 400 sq m outdoor exhibition and a 100 sq m indoor exhibition.

The Floriada 2002 in Haarlem is held once every 10 years. From mid-April to mid-October, about three million people enjoy everything Floriada has to offer. A third of these visitors come from outside the Netherlands.

The Floriada Park covers 65 hectares. It exhibits every aspect of Dutch horticulture, from vegetables and fruit, to bulbs, flowers and plants to trees, bushes and shrubs.

“Each area has its own specific character and atmosphere, and each in its own way conveys the main theme of Floriada 2002,” said Diana Vladova, one of the associates of the expo.

There are 45 countries and numerous trade organisations taking part in Floriada 2002.

The Bulgarian garden at the Floriada 2002 recreates the courtyard of the Bulgarian Renaissance with everlasting symbols like wild geranium, pottery and vine arbour. Represented are typical features of the country’s architectural monuments and its historical lifestyles.

The project of Bulgarian garden is a stylised re-creation of the country’s national heritage. It is developed in three themed sections, reviving the successive stages in the development of architecture during the Bulgarian Renaissance.

A house of the Sub-Balkan region, dating back to the mid-18th century, features a demonstration of the process of essential oils extraction. There is also an exhibition of tools and vessels used by Bulgarian rose distillers, as well as essential oils products.

The third part of Bulgaria’s display is an exhibition of architectural and plant elements. Connoisseurs of Bulgarian cuisine are welcomed in an authentic wooden building with a fire-place. There is a garden with fragrant herbs and seasonings such as lavender and savoury.

The Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry, Expocentre Ltd and the magazines Gradina (Garden) and Trapeza (Table) are the patrons of Bulgaria’s exhibition.
