09:10 Thu 09 Aug 2007

Telephone connections damaged by torrential rains are being gradually restored in the Tsar Kaloyan municipality in north-eastern Bulgaria.

In Razgrad, three rescue teams have been working to restore water supplies. The situation should be at least partially remedied in Tsar Kaloyan by August 8, according to Bulgarian news agency BTA.

Razgrad regional governor Nasko Atanassov said that electricity would fully restored in the village of Ezerche and 80 per cent restored in the town of Tsar Kaloyan.

Sixteen vans and four chemical toilets have been made available to families whose homes have been destroyed. More of these temporary shelters may be provided.

At least 1000 houses have been flooded in Tsar Kaloyan, which has a population of 4000. Five people died in the flood, and three are missing.

As of noon on August 8, the crisis management centre has lifted the state of emergency in the Pazardzhik municipality, which was also damaged by flooding.

Disinfection of flooded administrative and public buildings has begun in Pazardzhik, where two commissions are working to account for damages.
