Bulgaria and Romania have done much to achieve their development goals, said Stability Pact special co-ordinator for South-Eastern Europe Erhard Busek.

He said that the situation in the region had changed a lot after the establishment of the Stability Pact in 1999.

The economic climate in both countries had improved and the results were visible, Busek said, as quoted by Focus news agency.

There was much to be done in the fight against corruption and to establish an effective judicial system, Busek said.

He said that one of the pact’s symbols was the bridge connecting the Bulgarian town of Vidin to Romania’s Kalafat. The bridge is among the oldest Stability Pact’s projects.

The Pact should use diplomatic pressure on both countries and the international financial institutions to convince them that the entrance of Transport Corridor IV needed to be relocated, Busek said.

Busek said that there hopefully would be further similar projects at the border with Romania.
