Bulgaria and Romania’s EU accession would cause changes in the European Commission (EC) structure, mediapool.bg reported.
Once the two countries enter the EU, they would have to appoint their own commissioners in specific fields.
Bulgaria and Romania are expected to join the EU on January 1 2007. The final decision on the two countries’ EU accession would be taken in December 2006.
EC considers the fields it would entrust to the Bulgarian and Romanian commissioners, mediapool.bg said.
EC president Jose Manuel Barroso said that some of the duties of current commissioners could be delegated to form new positions.
Bulgaria and Romania’s EU accession would be used as an excuse for more serious changes in the EC, according to Italian information agency ANSA.
The changes would probably affect EU immigration, development, trade and transport commissioners, ANSA said.
EU high representative for common foreign and security policy Javier Solana would probably depose his retirement, ANSA said. His retirement would cause even greater changes in the EC structure, mediapool.bg reported.
