Romania and Bulgaria reacted with disappointment to the UK decision to impose restrictions on the free access of workers from the two countries to the British labour market.
Home secretary John Reid announced the limitations on October 24. Unskilled workers from the two countries would be able to work only in food processing and agriculture after Bulgaria and Romania’s EU entry, The Times reported.
Workers would be allowed employment in other sectors only in cases of labour hand shortage, The Times reported.
These restrictions contrast UK’s decision to keep an open door policy for workers from the 10 countries that became EU members in 2004.
Bulgarian officials threatened to undertake reciprocal measures that would affect citizens of EU member countries that decide to curb worker migration.
Foreign Ministry spokesperson Dimitar Tsanchev said “such a decision puts us in an unequal position compared with the 10 new EU member states who joined in 2004."

| They should have done this with the Poles! - There are 40 million Poles, only 8 million Bulgarians. This is what happens when a countries population is fed thier opinions by the media. My heart goes out to the small relatively small number of Bulgarians who want to head over to London and see what they can make of it. | |

| I fully support the view expressed by Foreign Ministry spokesperson Dimitar Tsanchev said “such a decision puts us in an unequal position compared with the 10 new EU member states who joined in 2004."
Bulgaria should, when elected in January, put its case before the European Court.
In my opinion this ranks as discrimination, a subject which we should all be aware is not practiced in the modern 'civilised world'.

| Having a Bulgarian wife for almost four years I am of course just a tint disappointed that both Romania and Bulgaria are being singled out for harsh treatment. The government here in the UK is trying to win back some voters by their approach. I for one would be happy for both countries to react in similar ways, perhaps even defending their property markets in the interim. | |

| This is a disappointment and hopefully this will not reflect the view of the British people.

| Home Secretary John Reid of the UK should reconsider his decision to restrict the access of Bulgarian and Romanian workers to the Labor Market. This is an unjust decision which must be revoked immediately. | |
