A Bulgarian delegation presented to European Commission officials in Brussels constitution changes and the manner in which these would maintain the independence of the judiciary.
Brussels already criticized the constitution amendments Parliament approved in March, Dnevnik newspaper reported. According to the EC the changes would take away power from the judiciary, giving it to the executive branch.
Members of the ruling coalition said they would try to change the negative EC attitude but would keep the new texts without any further corrections.
If EC insisted on further changes, these could be implemented after consultation with European experts, MPs from the ruling coalition said.
Talks would continue until Bulgaria and Brussels come to an agreement, head of the parliamentary judicial committee Yanaki Stoilov said.
Bulgaria needs time to evaluate and implement EU suggestions, Stoilov said. National Movement Simeon II (NMSII) member Mincho Spasov said that the EC expected fast measures without giving any specific recommendations.
