Media pirates reigned in Bulgaria, Reuters news agency reported.
“Welcome to Bulgaria, where low wages, easy internet access, and lax law enforcement have let illegal CDs and downloads eclipse the legal sale of music and other digital media”, Reuters said.
Piracy was a mini model of a Bulgarian reality where organised crime ruled major parts of the economy, according to Reuters.
EU was afraid of crime import after Bulgaria and Romania's EU entry and had asked both countries to deal with the problem, Reuters said.
Bulgaria tried to calm EU fears by approving laws and closing piracy markets, but the result was unsatisfactory.
"There is perfect legislation in Bulgaria, but it is not being implemented," Philip Gounev, a research fellow at the Sofia-based Centre for the Study of Democracy told Reuters.
