BSP wants a committee to research Kujovic row
15:01 Wed 23 Jan 2008 - Rene Beekman

Members of Parliament of the Bulgarian Socialist Party (BSP) decided on January 22 to propose a parliamentary inquiry into the Kujovic row, mediapool.bg said.

Serbian Budimir Kujovic was arrested in early January in connection with an attempted transport of 60 kg of heroin. The transport was said to be part of a larger transport of 4 tons total, which the Interior Ministry said to be following. In order to arrest Kujovic, he had allegedly been provided by Bulgarian authorities with a false passport, even though he had previously been barred entry into the country for a period of ten years.
Several high-placed interior ministry officials resigned or were removed from their positions. The case caused accusations of an "umbrella" in police and interior ministry circles, protecting production and transport of amphetamine in Bulgaria.

BSP said it would propose the formation of a committee, composed of representatives of parliamentary groups and the ruling coalition. The committee would have one month to "clarify who had approved and acted to issue a false passport to Budimir Kujovic," mediapool.bg quoted a BSP statement.

Opposition parties have already announced they would not take part in a committee where the ruling coalition would have a majority, as that committee was not likely to clarify anything, mediapool.bg said.

Unofficially, the BSP said there were strong doubts about such a committee within the party, as the case was already in the hands of prosecutors and a parliamentary inquiry would criticise the party's Interior Minister and his ministry.
These fears would be taken away if a committee of the ruling coalition would perform the inquiry, mediapool.bg said.
