The majority of the UK citizens supported imposing restrictions on the migration of workers, a Tonight With Trevor McDonald survey showed.
A controversy arose in the UK in the past several months whether to keep the “open door” policy for immigrants after Bulgaria and Romania entered the EU in 2007. A number of public figures claimed migrant workers occupied the jobs British youngsters.
Only four per cent of the people questioned in the survey believed the government had immigration under control, The Guardian said.
Almost 50 per cent said they were hesitating whether to vote for the current party in office because of its policy on migrant workers, The Guardian said.
Another survey, made by YouGov, revealed that 80 per cent of the people thought migrants took jobs from British workers. Nearly 67 per cent said Britain was loosing its culture, The Guardian said. More than 2000 people were questioned in this survey.
Chris Woodhead, former chief inspector of schools, said that “the overall standards of education have been affected negatively ... by the arrival of immigrant children”. The situation would become "very, very serious" if large numbers of Bulgarians and Romanians were allowed into the country”, he said.

![]() | My wife is from Bulgaria and has been living with me for almost four years in the UK. With her are two of my step sons, one of whom speaks perfect English and is advancing to his "A" levels next year. The youngest at seven also speaks and reads English as well as any other English pupil. My wife also works in a local primary school as a Teaching Assistant. Instead of creating problems within the educational system in the UK my wife and her children have only positive effects and integration, so I am sure that many similar families who might decide to settle in the UK would assimilate very quickly. | ![]() |
