British millionaire Scott Alexander bought a village in the Bulgarian seaside which he plans to re-name after himself.
The rather 'extravagant' purchase cost Alexander three million pounds, The Independent reported. Alexander said that the 1 000 people living in the village were 'quite excited' despite the change in the name as they were 'keen on business and responsive to change'.
After the purchase Alexander plans to turn the village into a coastal resort especially for British tourists. He described the deal as 'a sound investment', taking into consideration the expected boom in real estate prices once Bulgaria joins the EU.
The resort project includes the construction of new apartments, a casino and a lifestyle centre. The rest of the land will be re-sold to other British investors.
Alexander was recently proclaimed Britain's vainest man. He has a 10 000 pound portrait of himself painted on one of the walls of his mansion. Alexander spent 55 000 pound on a new teeth set. Additional expenses include 15 000 pounds a month for clothes, 2 000 pounds for botox injections and 100 000 pounds for growth hormone a year.

![]() | Am surprised that the local authorities allow such a purchase, and one made by someone so obvioulsy intent on soley making profit at the expense of the local community, I wonder if they wil be on a profit sharing scheme when he comes to resell, and whether any of th new facilities will be accesible to the villagers? As stated in previous mail, I am sure the local "business" men willwelcome him with open arms (arms - literally) | ![]() |

![]() | I saw the program featuring this guy and agree with many of the comments above but all this stuff about pride and selling the Bulgarian soul is all guff. He is one guy and who knows what will happen to the villagers. I hope they will benefit. It may be romantic for us from the West to see aged Babas leaning on a stick tending their animals but this development could be an opportunity for lots the local people. | ![]() |

![]() | Dear Sir,I have tried to give this article some thought. After a short while I realised that this not new and things like this happened in all countrys for a longtime. One of the most famous being PortSunlight in England in the Victorian period.( anybody ever hear of Sunlight washing up liquid?)All we can hope for is that he makes a good development! As for the comments about "the local buisnessmen"all I can say is that nobody becomes a millionaire by being nice!!! So I think this guy can look after himself. | ![]() |

![]() | Unfortunately, purchasing an entire poor village and turning it into a resort town is nothing new for Bulgaria or the rest of the world. All one has to do is go to Sunny Beach or Golden Sands to see how crowded and overbuilt the seaside can be. Those two resort beaches already have too many hotels and the building boom shows no sign of abating. There is practically no place on the sand for a tourist to sit on a hot sunny day and walking along the shore in the evening is like driving a bumper car. The Bulgarian government is promoting its seaside as Eco-Tourism, but the long term damage to the environment is already well underway. Does the purchase of a few more acres by a British loony make a big difference? - of course not? Do the Bulgarian villagers realize the long term effect of selling their land? - Yes of course, they'll grab the money and spend it abroad. | ![]() |

![]() | Heard about this a few days ago, and was initially amazed, business and money have no boundrys (The ugly face of Capitilism) anything is for sale, you just have to find the price people will pay, i am sure the villagers know what they are doing and what benefit it will have for them. | ![]() |

![]() | Dear Scott
I hope you will find it in your heart to help us out. We have had our retirement savings "stolen" by a Bulgarian builder. Please see text below:
"My name is Lorraine Kitchen and my husband and I plan to have a villa built just outside of Varna, in a village called Konstantinovo and retire there in 3 years time. We love it there very much.
We engaged an agent who in turn engaged a builder to build our villa for us. This was done in August 2005. Although full permissions were not granted until April 2006 the builder went ahead and built the foundations after receiving from the agents his initial fee of 19,000 euros. To date we still only have foundations, which incidentally have been built with many mistakes, and after signing a new contract in May 2006 in which we gave him 2 months to complete the build, he has done nothing else.
Our lawyer is now in the process of canceling the contract and we instructed him to sue him for breach of contract as the build has many defaults.
After making enquiries through the courts the lawyer found he had no assets at all in his name. We know for a fact that he has a house outside Varna and an apartment in Varna. Very clever and devious man eh?
As this payment was 50% of the house build, we now do not have enough money to complete the build which was to be our retirement home.
I cannot tell you how we feel at the moment - I guess drained and very hurt will not quite convey to you the deep pain we feel to know that the country we have chosen to retire to people could be so devious as to "rip" people off for there hard earned lifetime savings!
Can you tell me if there is anything you you do to help us in this matter, as this man is giving Bulgaria a very bad name, and is not doing anything to aid the infusion of foreign monies into Bulgaria. We would both be very grateful for any help you can offer".
We will be eternally grateful to you and I am sure the public will applaud you whole-heartedly.
