The Bourgas- Alexandroupolis oil pipeline project is important for Bulgaria, Russia and Greece since it will position them among the countries responsible for major energy infrastructure, Prime Minister Sergei Stanishev said.
On March 15 Stanishev attended in Athens the signing of the agreement for the construction of the pipeline. Russian president Vladimir Putin and Greek prime minister Kostas Karamanlis were also present.
Bourgas- Alecandroupolis will guarantee economic development for the participating countries, as well as for the Southeast European region, Stanishev said.
“My country alone will have nearly 1000 new work places and will receive hundreds of millions of dollars annually from transit taxes,” Stanishev said.
Apart from direct economic benefits, Stanishev said, the pipeline will produce strategic gains and will increase Bulgaria’s energy security.
The use of modern equipment for the construction was also important, Stanishev said. It was going to guarantee the protection of the Black Sea coast, vital for Bulgaria’s tourism development.
