Sofia mayor Boiko Borissov said he would refrain from participation in the upcoming presidential elections but would select and support another candidate.
Borissov said he could not abandon the work he needed to complete as Sofia mayor, mainly related to the refuse collection problems of the capital. Borissov's political formation Citizens for the European Development of Bulgaria (CEDB) would select and support another presidential candidate, Bulgarian news agency BTA reported.
Two presidential candidates, current President Georgi Purvanov and rightist representative Nedelcho Beronov preferred to be nominated by initiative committees, which signified they were uncertain of the support Bulgarian parties received, Borissov said.
Borissov called for high electoral activity, which could prevent the uprising of balancing political powers or ethnically-based movements, BTA reported.
