Barcelona, which is rebuilding after the sacking of Frank Rijkaard and appointment of Josep Guardiola as head coach, could once again turn their attention towards signing Bulgarian striker Dimitar Berbatov, Spanish newspaper As has reported.

The Catalan club is hoping to announce the signing of main target Emmanuel Adebayor within a week, but may have to look elsewhere, as the Togolese striker's current club Arsenal appear unwilling to sell.

Barcelona has already spent 60 million euro in this transfer window and are unwilling to pay more than 20 million euro for Adebayor, with Arsenal demanding 35 million euro. With Ronaldinho, Deco and Eto'o still on the books of the club despite being put up for sale, Barcelona cannot afford any major financial outlays, the Spanish daily said.

Berbatov is Barcelona's back-up option, given that he could leave Tottenham Hotspur, although that would depend on the London club buying Spanish striker David Villa from Valencia. Spurs have offered 20 million euro for Villa, a price much too low for the current top scorer at Euro 2008, As said.
