The name of Tottenham Hotspurs’ Bulgarian striker Dimitar Berbatov was mentioned as one of the possible transfer targets for the next season for one of the biggest football clubs in Spain, Barcelona, Catalonian newspaper Sport said.

Berbatov was central to the plans of Tottenham manager Juande Ramos, but the club would agree to let the Bulgarian go if any of the bidders agreed to pay 50 million euro for him, Sport said.

Berbatov was on the transfer lists of a number of Europe’s major clubs, among which Real Madrid, Milan, Inter, Chelsea, Manchester United and Manchester City. However, Tottenham was not inclined to sell him to an English club, The Sunday Mirror said.
 
The newspaper quoted “close friends” of the Bulgarian as saying that “this will be his last season at White Hart Lane as he seeks to join a team who can match his own ambitions and are regularly playing Champions League football.”

Ramos had made it clear that he wanted to keep Berbatov, but if a prospective buyer paid the amount demanded by the club, it would mean a near-£30m profit on the price Tottenham paid German club Bayer Leverkusen for the striker in the summer of 2006. “It will provide Ramos with immense spending power to find a replacement,” The Sunday Mirror said.
