BAN ON HORSE-DRAWN CARTS IN BULGARIA 'IS DISCRIMINATION AGAINST ROMA’
11:50 Tue 31 Jul 2007

The Commission for Protection Against Discrimination (CPAD) has recommended that Sofia municipal council withdraw its ban on horse-drawn carts entering Sofia.

The carts are forbidden from entering the city centre and almost all main boulevards, mediapool.bg said.

According to CPAD, the ban opened the way for racial discrimination.

Romani Baht, an NGO representing Roma people, filed a formal complaint against the ban.

The organisation’s main complaint was against the ban on carts entering Lomsko Shousse, Botevgradsko Shousse boulevards and the ring road. The ban in effect deprived residents of the three districts, which are mainly inhabited by Roma, from leaving their homes with their vehicles, the organisation said.

The ban was approved in 2006, mediapool.bg said.

Sofia municipal council can appeal against CPAD’s recommendation in the Supreme Administrative Court.

We are a UK family leaving soon to live in Bulgaria, we are horse lovers, and feel that this is descrimination, to ban the Roma's from taking there horses and carts into the towns! We like to see this old way of life it is part of the beauty of the country! We think that they should be allowed to do what they have been doing for years! I do feel though that more attention should be paid to the Shanty town outside of Sofia Airport, now that is worth doing something about ? isnt it?

Are you out of your mind, if you love so much horse, go to the zoo. It is not appropriate to ride horse on main boulevards in all European capitals, why Sofia should let those exotics behaviours. Your Queen enjoy doing so, while the spectacle is pretty different on a congestion road where is full of lorries and cars. And think a bite about those poor horses surround by cars and smoking lorries, is so sad that you want to make there life painful.
