Bulgaria’s Interior Ministry would be ‘uncompromising’ with the attempts for disorder and disturbance of ethnic peace in the country, Interior Ministry Roumen Petkov said.
Petkov’s statement came after a work meeting of Interior Ministry management and President Georgi Purvanov, Bulgarian National Radio (BNR) reported.
Interior Ministry reported to the President the actions taken in the riots in Sofia’s Krasna Polyana residential district. Interior Ministry officials explained their work with “young people with extremist ideas” and Roma-people, who took part in the disorder.
On August 12 and 13 2007 Roma people entered a bar, destroyed it and beat four visitors in response to an act of violence against a Roma boy. The next night, tens of Roma caused a disorder in Krasna Polyana, claiming that they had heard that skinheads who were going to seek revenge.
Police detained eight people who allegedly took part in incidents.
Petkov called on Roma party Evroroma leader Tsvetelin Kunchev and on Bulgarian National Union leader Boyan Rasate not to make use of the situation for personal advancement.
