AT LEAST SIX PER CENT OF GDP NEEDED FOR HEALTHCARE IN BULGARIA- BMU
14:15 Tue 19 Jun 2007

During a meeting with Health Minister Radoslav Gaidarski, representatives of the Bulgarian Medical Union (BMU) said that at least six per cent of the GDP should be allocated to healthcare.

BMU chairperson Andrei Kehayov said that a number of compromises had been previously made but it was time to tell society the truth about healthcare funding and how insufficient it was.

Framework agreement talks should start over again, Kehayov said.

Parliamentary healthcare committee head Borislav Kitov said that unions, the National Health Fund and Health Ministry should discuss healthcare funding and present accounts of the finds needed to Parliament.

Each year Bulgaria registered a budget surplus and healthcare funding could increase, Kitov said.
