ANCIENT MASK AND ARTIFACT SMUGGLING PREVENTED AT BULGARIAS BORDER

Bulgarias customs officers seized an ancient mask and coins at Kalotina border checkpoint.

The artifacts were found in a bus traveling from Bulgaria to Austria, Focus news agency reported.

Officers found the mask wrapped in nylon. It represents a human face, made of white, unidentified metal. At first none of the passengers admitted knowing anything about the mask.

Three ancient coins were found during a search of 35-year-old Bulgarian citizen. The passenger confessed that he was trying to export the coins and the mask to Austria.

An expert analysis of the artifacts is to be carried out.

During another operation customs officers and border police prevented the smuggling of 127 artifacts at the Rousse border checkpoint.

A big number of artifacts were found in a van having Bulgarian registration, Focus said.

The artifacts were hidden in the luggage of a Bulgarian citizen.

Ancient coins of various origin, crosses and a small bronze head are among the artifacts seized.
