It is late at night and the streets seem to be entangled in a mysterious darkness. Even the city centre with its flickering lamps and lights dying out appears to be asleep. As you approach Studentski Grad, however, glimmering colours dazzle your eyes – discos, bars, clubs and casinos pop up on both sides of the road. Despite the incredible variety available, you still can’t make up your mind, for you secretly hope for a place that would miraculously blend all of the options into one. Impossible? Not quite…
Mega Xtreme Bowling Center, a modern and lustrous bowling alley and entertainment centre, is standing right in front of you. With 18 lanes, six billiard tables, five electronic dart targets and many electronic games, a dance floor and a refined bar, this is the ultimate place for a well-spent night. Even if you and your friends happen to have different tastes, this centre is by no mistake named Mega Xtreme.
While the interiors of most other bowling alleys tend to confuse their visitors with multiple sections for the various activities, this one welcomes you with its open perspective. The venue accounts for one single, but extremely spacious and well-designed, centre. Hence, you can scan it all: the lanes at the back, the billiard tables and games to your left, and the bar and the tables to your right.
As you further make your way into the ebullient crowd, you are confronted with a pleasant mix of pop music and glittering disco lights. The overall atmosphere is of a fresh and modern place, with the graffiti on the walls only amply adding a punkish touch to the colourful picture. It looks new and fancy. Each facet with an original design, even the ceiling and the walls. Just look at the illuminated bowls and the glossy balls rolling along lighted lanes. Should you notice that a mass of people has already arrived, you may have to join the waiting list before bowling. Although one of the biggest bowling alleys in Sofia, Mega Xtreme Bowling has its limits, too.
The price for children (up to 12 years) from 10am until 8pm is two leva and afterwards (until 4am), four leva. For adults, before the border hour of 5pm it is three leva, and five leva afterwards.
Unlike most other billiard clubs where overused tables and equipment show their wear quite clearly, materials and textures here are of high quality. Logically, however, you will be asked to pay for that quality – nine leva an hour. The rest of the games, arranged along the walls on your left, cost 50 stotinki each. They include darts, foosball, air hockey and a variety of electronic games.
If you happen to be a professional or simply a fan of bowling, in this area you will find posted the results of the recent Fantastiko 2006 Tournament. Should you decide to wander for a while and enjoy the interior, you can take a look at the award cups, certificates and medals of the winners, too. The authorised Dexter Pro shop is situated on the other side of the entrance. It exhibits one quite wide range of creative bowling balls – some of them mischievously smile at you with their yellow faces, others have a ball or hammers jammed inside, or are simply dyed like a soccer ball. All of that pretty successfully adds to the authentic atmosphere of the venue.
The Mega Xtreme Bowling alley organises not only tournaments, but also birthday and other parties and events, etc.
Already tired and need to chill out? Naturally, there’s plenty of room to sit down and have a refreshing drink. A considerable portion of the bowling alley is designed so that you can comfortably snug in a cozy corner. There is the cafe-type spot with sofas and couches where you can retreat from the overall chaos and enjoy your privacy. The colours, shapes and design of the surroundings relieve your fatigue and have a refreshing effect.
Nonetheless, the view form this point is excellent and you can still observe the whole club and the delight of others. If you still want to sit down but prefer to be in the centre of things, there are a good number of tables in the heart of the venue (rather than at the back). There, sipping a cocktail or a glass of wine, you have a good view of absolutely all games occuring…
Last, but categorically not least, is the bar. Even if you are nothing of a sports fan, the bar could very well keep you busy. The variety of drinks is simply amazing. Hot, soft, shots, shakes, cocktails – you name it. Each category comes with at least a page of representatives, all bound in an artistic menu. What you may find intriguing is the selection of quality gums, ice-creams, candies, nuts, chips and pop corn they offer you. If you get carried away and are mad hungry, you can always order a sandwich, salad or an appetiser. It is recommended that you order a cocktail – it is a true delight to watch how a real bartender deftly pours out and shakes a selection from the list of drinks and then swiftly rewards you with it.
While enjoying the drink or the prompt service of the young staff, you might take a glance at the dancers behind you… Yes, that bowling-bar-game centre has a dance floor, too. If you want a special song, the DJ is right at the corner of the bar. He plays mostly popular music, so probably everyone will be satisfied.
Something is still left out? Quite possibly, you have to either spend the night there or go at least three times if you want to relish each activity the venue holds for you. So if you are already spellbound by this island of nightlife pleasures, just remember to take your ID and… that bus 94 has stopped running for the night!
