All options in the trial of the five Bulgarian nurses sentenced to death for HIV infection in Libya were possible, President Georgi Purvanov said.
Purvanov commented on the upcoming appeal of the nurses death sentences before Libyas Supreme Court. The court can confirm, modify or overrule the sentences.
Bulgaria was thankful to the EU and all its partners for the support, Purvanov said. During the past months European institutions did a lot to aid the nurses and to provide proper treatment for the Libyan children infected with HIV.
On June 17,Purvanov met diplomats from EU member countries and from countries applying for union membership.
All present diplomats said that they supported the freedom of the nurses.
At the same time a representative of the families of the infected children said that compensation should be provided for the case to be settled.
He said as quoted by Reuters news agency that Libyan court would hopefully turn down the death sentence appeal. The death sentences could be overruled if compensation was provided to the families of the infected children.
