16:18 Fri 09 Feb 2007

Demands for fast resolution of the taxi driver murder in Sofia received the support of Interior Minister Roumen Petkov.

Petkov presented to MPs some of the measures undertaken to find the culprit. A taxi driver was stabbed to death on the morning of February 9 in Sofia's residential district of Luylin.

Specific information on the investigation could not be revealed before it ended, said Petkov. Petkov and other Cabinet members are to meet taxi drivers and discuss their work safety.

Drivers have been protesting throughout central Sofia and hindering city traffic all day long. Vehicles blocked Tsarigradsko Shousse and the protest is ongoing for six hours already.

Petkov said that various measures could be introduced to ensure safe working conditions.

One of the options involves the positioning of a screen between the front and the back seats of each taxi. Laws should be drafted to enforce such measures on the national level, said Petkov.

Other options involved the installing of a panic button in each taxi and the setting up of a GPS tracking system, said Petkov.
