12:45 Tue 08 May 2007

Officials from the state agency for debt collection in Bulgaria started collecting debts from people owing the state sums of less than 5000 leva.

Debts being collected include those owed to road police, municipalities, customs and tax authorities, Novinar daily reported.

The campaign started in Sofia and will also involve the cities and towns of Pernik, Kyustendil, Blagoevgrad, Plovdiv, Stara Zagora, Smolyan, Haskovo and Kurdzhali.

Debt-collectors will confiscate the property, including the cars, of debtors.

If debtors manage to pay off their debt they will receive their property back.

If people owe smaller sums, garnishee orders will be made against their salaries, bank accounts or cars. This can happen only if the salary or income of debtors exceeds 250 leva.
