ABSURD SPEEDING CAUSE OF ACCIDENTS ON NEW SECTION TRAKIYA HIGHWAY - GOVERNMENT OFFICIAL
11:56 Tue 09 Oct 2007

The cause for all the accidents on the newly opened section of the Trakiya highway was absurd speeding, Veselin Georgiev, executive director of Republican Road Infrastructure fund (RRI) said.

On the first day after its official opening, seven accidents happened on the new section of highway near Stara Zagora, Focus news agency said.

All signs had been in place and were in accordance with traffic regulations before the road was put into use, Georgiev said. And every highway has an end, he added.

At 1 500 meters before the end of the highway there is a sign that the highway ends, followed by a series of signs which gradually bring the maximum speed down from 90 to 40 km per hour, Georgiev said.

"All accidents have been caused by speeding. I don't know how to comment on the behavior of the mother of a five year old child, who passed with 190 km per hour, where there is a sign that says 40," Georgiev said.

Additional warning lights would be installed and the road would be cut at 1 km intervals in order to make drivers slow down.
