Violeta Draganova, an employee of the Traffic Police's administration in the town of Kazanlak, central Bulgaria, was sentenced to one year of probation, Plovdiv based news website Plovdiv24.com said on April 22 2008, after being convicted of issuing 30 driving licences to people who had not passed driving tests. Her sentence was handed down by Plovdiv’s regional military court.
Draganova charged candidates 500 euro for her services, the investigation revealed. Most of the people who took advantage of Draganova's services were Roma working abroad.
Draganova confessed to all charges.
The “candidates” were sending Draganova statements in which they claimed to have lost their driving licences abroad and wanted new ones. In the same statement they declared that they had passed the driving tests. Draganova’s role was to process their applications without first checking candidates’ credentials.
