One out of five Bulgarians will be over 65 years old in 2025, a report by World Bank (WB) showed.

Ukraine's population will decrease by one fifth by 2025 and the average age of Slovenians will be 47.4 years ranking them among the oldest population in the world, the report said as quoted by investor.bg.

Bulgarian population will decrease to 1.5 million people. Eastern European countries and former Soviet Union countries will experience a unique third transition period.

Many countries will experience intense population ageing and industrial countries like France, Italy and Japan will experience population decrease after 2010.

The combination of of fast ageing and relatively poor population is typical only for Eastern European countries and former Soviet Union republics.

The poorest country with the oldest population is Georgia.

Population ageing is expected to continue in countries where the birth rate is lower than reproduction coefficient for years like in Japan and Western Europe.

Bulgaria, the Czech Republic and Slovenia together with Japan and Italy could turn out to be the countries with the oldest population in the world, the report said.
