12:52 Fri 27 Apr 2007

An online poll showed that 97.3 per cent of Bulgarians support a full or partial public smoking ban.

The poll focuses on future EU policies related to smoking in public places. It involved Bulgarians from various age groups and profession and Bulgarians living in Portugal, France, Spain, UK, Belgium and the US.

Less than three per cent said that they were against any kind of ban.

The results showed that 90 per cent of the non-smokers support the full smoking ban and 10 approve partial limitations. Nearly 94 per cent of all ex-smokers said that smoking should be banned everywhere, including at work places. Another six per cent support a partial ban.

Most of the current smokers who voted against the ban, said that their opinion was based on the right of personal freedom. Nearly 40.9 per cent were against any ban, 27 per cent supported total ban and 31.8 per cent approved partial ban.
