09:10 Mon 01 Oct 2007

From the beginning of 2007 until the end of September, 760 people died in road accidents in Bulgaria, data from Bulgarian traffic police (KAT), published on September 30, showed.

This is comparable to a medium size Bulgarian village, erased from the map, mediapool.bg said.

Over the first nine months of 2007, KAT registered 5 879 accidents with 7 181 victims.  Compared to the same period last year, this was 266 accidents and 478 victims less.

Over the whole of 2006, 8 182 accidents had been registered, in which 1038 people lost their lives and 10 161 were wounded, mediapool.bg said.

Highly disturbing figures, hope authorities and police will take a note and try to educate the people to drive slowly and safely.I hope people would understand it is better to be late then never.Ministry of transport need to act fast it is very high percentage compared to the population of the country.

I am a driver with 30 years experience from cars to lorries and at times towing a trailer in cities in the UK 15 metres long. Driving in Bulgaria from what I have encountered is 1)Driving too close to the vehicle in front 2) Major pot holes in roads, even on some motorways and 3)Unlit roads either street lighting or 'cats eyes' which are a must when driving at night. Bulgaria is now a member of the EU and ready to invest millions on new roads and motorways. Your government can help in saving lives by putting in these 'cats eyes' when making the new roads. Drivers must learn to keep a much bigger distance from the car in front. This will come in time with education through advertising
