Bulgaria would need 62 million leva to launch the 112 emergency telephone line in the whole country, Disaster Management Minister Emel Etem told Parliament on November 9 2007.
A total of 20 million leva had already been spent on the optic system of the emergency line, Etem said as quoted by mediapool.bg. State Agency for Information Technologies and Communications provided the money.
The line already operated in Sofia.
According to Etem, an average of 40 000 to 67 000 calls reached the 112 hotline in the capital every month. Most of the calls were about road accidents, fires, and other calamities.
A work group was preparing a draft-law for the implementation of the emergency number, which would go into force in 2008, Etem said.
The European Commission might sanction Bulgaria because of the delay in the implementation of the emergency line, mediapool.bg said.
