2007 FOOD PRICE INCREASES, PRICES FOR OIL 79% AND FLOUR 56% UP

Price comparisons between December 2007 and December 2006 by the State committee for commodities and marketplace (SCCM) have shown that especially food prices have gone up over the year.

Prices of oil increased most, with 79 per cent, while flour increased 56 per cent in price. Dairy products, eggs and rice were between 30 and 40 per cent more expensive compared to the year before, Dnevnik daily said. Lentils and beans increased 20 to 25 per cent in price, while prices for sugar and chicken meat went up by 10 to 13 per cent. Lowest increase was for the price for Frankfurter sausages, with only 2 per cent compared to December 2006.

While prices for fruit and vegetables in December were relatively high because of the season, some prices were lower in December 2007 compared to December 2006. Hothouse tomatoes in December 2007 sold for 1.80 leva per kg, compared to 1.90 leva the year before.
Locally produced cabbage increased 50 per cent in price, while potatoes increased 30 per cent.
