12KG OF DRUGS SEIZED AT BULGARIAN BORDERS

A total of 12 363kg of drugs were seized at border checkpoints in three drug-smuggling attempts busted during the first week of October 2007.

Most of the drug, 12.328kg of heroin, was found on October 2 at Silistra border checkpoint in the dashboard of a car with a Bulgarian registration. The heroin was divided into 24 packages.

Customs officers at Kapitan Andreevo and Dunav Most border checkpoints seized small quantities of heroin and marijuana.

Another 13 cases of contraband as well as hunting cartridges and 60 560 pieces of cigarettes were seized.

The drugs were found during an international operation in the fight against the illegal drug trafficking, initiated by the regional centre for fight against trans-border crime in Bucharest. Customs and police services of another 10 countries, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Greece, Macedonia, Moldova, Romania, Slovenia, Serbia, Turkey, Hungary and Croatia, took part in the operation.
