Nearly 120 scientists, artists, public figures and journalists signed a petition for the preservation of Strandzha national park.
Citizens started the sign up sheet to counter an order questioning the status of the region, Dnevnik daily reported.
Almost 6500 Bulgarians supported the initiative online.
Tsarevo municipality decided to challenge the national park status in front of the Supreme Administrative Court. The status of Strandzha imposes some construction limitations within the parks territory.
The list with the signatures of the famous Bulgarians was submitted to President Georgi Purvanov, Parliament speaker Georgi Pirinski, Prime Minister Sergei Stanishev and ombudsman Ginio Ganev.
European nature preservation institutions already submitted their official positions on the issue. Among them are World Wide Fund (WWF) and Friends of the Earth.
Strandzha was named national park in 1995 and the decision received the approval of Tsarevo municipality. Now municipal authorities demand change due to ambiguity concerning the borders of the park.
