Sigríður Ingvarsdóttir, president since 1993 of charity organisation Caritas Iceland, is to be Bulgaria’s first honorary consul in Iceland.

The Cabinet in Sofia agreed on February 22 2012 to the opening of the consulate in Reykjavik, saying that it would contribute to broadening and deepening of bilateral contacts while carrying out the important task of protecting Bulgaria’s interests and people in Iceland.

Ingvarsdóttir, who graduated in political science from the University in Iceland in 1984, in business studies at the London School of Economics in 1989, in arts administration from City University London in 1990 and has a diploma in contemporary arts studies from Sotheby’s, has had a career mainly in broadcasting and communications.

She speaks English, German and Danish and has a particular interest in Bulgaria, having in 1998, with her husband, Herluf Clausen, adopted a son from Bulgaria.
