Seven people were arrested in Sofia on February 10 2012 in what the Interior Ministry called "Operation Hammer", intended to smash a large-scale illegal drug distribution gang.

The group allegedly was headed by a 36-year-old man nicknamed "The Squirrel" who, the ministry said, was found in possession of 10 000 euro.

Four people were still being sought, police said.

During raids at various addresses in the Bulgarian capital city, mobile phones, computer equipment, cash and drug paraphernalia were seized, the Interior Ministry said. The group allegedly distributed mainly cocaine and marijuana.

The ministry said that the group had worked with a strict hierarchical structure with divisions of functions.

The others arrested ranged in age from 41 to 48.

The ministry said that the evidence had been reported to the Sofia City Prosecutor’s Office. Those held in the operation had been placed in 72-hour detention.
