Bulgaria's Maritime Administration agency said on February 8 that it suspended all shipping on the Danube River for an indefinite period due to the difficult weather conditions and the increased amount of ice. A similar decision has been made by Romanian authorities, Bulgaria's Transport Ministry said in a statement.

The international Danube Commission has been notified of the decision and has been informed of the situation, the statement said.

However, ferry-boat service between the Bulgarian and Romanian banks of the river (at Vidin-Calafat and Oryahovo-Bechet) may continue if the ferry captains decide that the weather conditions allow the safe passage of the boats, the ministry said.

The ports of Lom, Vidin and Oryahovo on the Bulgarian bank would remain open and allow ships into their harbours for as long as shipping remains suspended.

The Maritime Administration said that it would continue to monitor the situation and would announce when shipping can resume.
