United States ambassador in Sofia, James Warlick, has asked USAID to approve a $50 000 donation to the Bulgarian Red Cross to assist people hard-hit by the floods in southern Bulgaria.

"We hope that this donation can assist those communities which are suffering, and especially those who have lost their homes," an embassy statement said.

The US government expressed its condolences on February 8, a national day of mourning in Bulgaria for those who died in the floods.

Warlick has written to President Rossen Plevneliev and Prime Minister Boiko Borissov to express his sympathy and to offer US assistance.

"We are all deeply affected by the disaster in communities in southern Bulgaria," Warlick said.  "I want to express my condolences to all the victims and offer US assistance to the many people who have been left homeless at this difficult time."

The US embassy is consulting with the US Agency for International Development to provide further assistance as needed and is also in touch with the European Union in order to assist victims in any way, the embassy statement said.
